While you may already know what you want in a camera, it's easy to forget about some of the basics. You may have decided on the number of megapixels you want and researched which brands are the highest rated, but have you considered the pros and cons of a manual or automatic focus, or taken into account how long the battery lasts?

Battery life often isn't related to the cost of the camera, so don't think that by spending more you will get a better battery. Some cameras use AA batteries or any kind, disposable or rechargeable. This is a good choice, as rechargeable batteries are cost effective and better for the environment, but if you're at a special event or away from the battery charger, you will be out of luck if your camera only takes rechargeables.

A manual focus will allow you to focus more accurately in some cases, so don't just opt for automatic because it's easier. Most experts recommend at least a 2X optical zoom, even though all cameras come with digital zoom.

You should stay away from cameras that use CD's or floppy disks. While it can be attractive as floppy disks are inexpensive, they won't hold many images, and most cameras that use them take pretty low-resolution photos, and digital cameras that use CD's are slow.

Remember that although a camera may have a lot of extra buttons, that doesn't make it superior. The simpler option may work better for you, and many of those same features can be found in inexpensive editing software that you can purchase afterwards.
