With many consumers making the commitment to go greener, it's no surprise that this has translated into the electronics world. More and more, laptop manufacturers are making notebook computers that are environmentally friendlier.
First off, if you buy a laptop rather than a desktop PC, you're already minimizing environmental impact, as it's a smaller unit, and the computer components are made of less materials. A desktop may have two graphics cores, more than one DVD or CD drive, and extra hard drives that mean more building materials, power, and waste.
"Green laptops” are smaller than other notebooks, have a longer lasting charge, and comply with environmental regulations. This comes as a result of programs in the US, which regulate how laptops are manufactured and recycled. The Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT), measures the green factor of electronic devices. The Green Electronics Council believes that computers that register with EPEAT could help cut down on a whopping 13 million pounds of toxic waste, and three million pounds of non-hazardous materials.
The categories measured are: materials selection, product longevity, end of life design and management, packaging, corporate performance, and reduction or elimination of environmentally sensitive products. Depending on how the manufacturer meets each requirement, the council gives them a rating of Gold, Silver or Bronze. If a laptop computer gets a Gold rating, this means that they meet all the standards as well as 75% of the optional criteria. Silver means they fulfill every required standard and 50% of the optional criteria, and Bronze means they fulfill all of the required standards.
So, next time you're shopping for a new laptop, keep in mind that green computers can be just as powerful and advanced as their non-green counterparts, and you're contributing to less power consumption and electronic waste in the landfills.
