MP3 players are ideal for people on the go, especially if you're running or biking, as they won't skip. As MP3 technology continues to move forward, it's getting more and more cost effective to get one of these portable music players.

First, always shop for price. Set your budget – you can get a decent but basic player for about $60 or so, or go all the way up to about $500 for a top of the line model. However, be on the lookout for bargain basement MP3 players, as they often won't last long or will have poor sound quality.

Once you've set your budget, get the most storage you can afford. The more storage you have, the more music you'll be able to hold. One minute of MP3 music takes up about 1MB of memory, so you just need to do the math: a 128 MB player will hold about two hours of songs.

An MP3 unit with FireWire or USB is best, rather than a parallel connection to your computer, as these work fast and are very flexible. Also look for an FM radio receiver, as some MP3 players can record music from the radio and then identify the title and artist the next time you connect the player to the computer.

If you have a Mac, read on: many MP3 players aren't compatible with Macintosh computers, although this is steadily improving. Make sure you don't get an incompatible player if you plan on using your MP3 player with a Mac.
