Is it time to drop the “Netbook” label? With new models frequently being introduced and the constant improvement of computer technology, the difference between a Netbook and a notebook is minimal. The first Netbooks were very small, around 7 or 8 inches, and were used mostly for browsing the internet. However, thanks to the move to larger-size screens and more features, the distinction between Netbooks and notebooks is slowly diminishing. Initially, Netbooks were marketed as a super portable, light, and inexpensive notebooks that ran a Linux operating system. It was only after Microsoft Windows XP was packaged, that the popularity of Netbooks surged. Now, the growth and demand for Netbooks are staggering.

Since 2008, the demand for Netbooks have been strong and is likely to get stronger, whereas sales of regular notebooks are projected to remain steady this year. For 2009, Netbooks are projected to earn a 20 percent share of worldwide computer sales. It is estimated that almost 33 million Netbooks will be sold this year, over a 100 percent increase from last year’s sales of 16 million.

One key reason why Netbooks have been so successful is because of its affordability. Although they typically have fewer features and are less powerful than notebooks, the cost savings cannot be overlooked. Netbook prices start from approximately $250, whereas notebooks are typically priced over $600. This is the exact reason why Netbooks have realized significant growth around the world. In 2008, 45 percent of Netbooks were shipped to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA).

If you need a computer for school, for business trips, or for travel, a Netbook is a great choice for you!
